To get started, try our flashcard template or follow the detailed instructions below for more advanced card sets.
Any two column Google Spreadsheet can become a set of flashcards. We have created templates that:
· makes creating content easy,
· gives you control over how certain fields display on your mobile device, · gives you control over certain modes, e.g., disable multiple choice, Study Mode, and Q&A reversal · makes the content searchable if you later share the document with gWhizMobile@gmail.com Please select the template that best fits your needs and device:
· Column B can also be used as a source of three alternative answers when viewed in multiple choice mode
· Supports hosted image urls for questions and answers in all modes including multiple choice
(for iOS only)
· Supports html text formating (bold, italic, etc.) in all modes including multiple choice (for iOS only)
Multiple Choice Test Template (for iOS only): · One Question (Column A) and with up to five unique Answers (Column B thru F) · Put the correct answer in column B (the display position will be randomized) or prefix the correct answer with two greater than signs >>
If you do not already have a Google account, you can set one up for FREE at www.google.com by selecting the Gmail link on the top left and then “Sign up for a new Google Account”. After you set up Gmail, you will want to select the Documents link to set up your Google Documents which allows you to create and edit spreadsheets.
Please follow the instructions below or review our brief creating and sharing flashcards demonstration. And if you are looking for some examples to follow, click here. To use a gWhiz Template: · Click on the appropriate link above. · You will be able to view the spreadsheet but you will need to sign in to Google Documents to make any changes
· Once signed in to Google Documents, select "File" and "Make a copy...". Name the file as you would like it to appear on your device, e.g., "Spanish Vocabulary".
· You'll see we have prepopulated the template with labels indicating where your data should be entered, e.g., questions in Column A, answers in Column B. · Also, a tip for Google spreadsheets; intra-cell multi-line entries requires a shift+enter or control+return (depending on your desktop computer type) to stay in the same cell. gFlash will automatically wrap text but if you want items to display on separate rows, you may find this helpful.
Note: be sure to use Google Spreadsheets not Google Forms
Need to make a quick edit from the device?
· Users may want to consider adding the Google mobile applications to their device. Google Documents allows a user to edit spreadsheet cells from the device. After you have made the edits in Google Documents, return to gFlash and redownload the cardset.
EXTRA FOR EXPERTS... Flashcards with Images for iOS and BlackBerry: · Supports image files hosted on the internet, see "Dog Breeds" or "Sign Language" examples in the gWhiz Catalog. · An active data connection is required on the device to display the image. Note that iOS versions cache the images for offline use. · Enter the whole url reference to the image and it will be called in realtime when the application displays that item, e.g., myimage.png · The “http:” must start in the first character of the cell. If you do not want to scroll around to see the entire image, 220x145 pixels is probably a good size (optimum size varies by mobile device).
You can embed both audio (.mp3, .mp4, and .wav) references to files stored on the Internet to the appropriate Google Spreadsheet cell. These files are then either downloaded to your device when you first download the cardset or in real time. Therefore an active wireless connection is required to initially load and cache the audio files. The best way to demonstrate this is through examples. This Bird Sounds cardset includes audio files, images, and text in both the question and answer side of the card. You may want to create a copy to experiment with your own audio files. You will need to find a host location for the audio files, e.g., a website included with your home Internet service or Google Sites.
Flashcards with Video Files for iOS:
You can embed, for example, YouTube video file references into the appropriate Google Spreadsheet cell. These files are not cached and the url is called when the flashcard is displayed. Therefore an active wireless connection is required to load and display video files. The best way to demonstrate this is through examples. This gFlashPro cardset includes an embedded YouTube demonstration. You may want to create a copy to experiment with your own video files. You will need to find a host location for video files, e.g., a website included with your home Internet service, Google Sites, or YouTube.
HTML Text Formating for iOS:
Several customers have requested more control over how cardset data is displayed. HTML (e.g., bolds, italics, font size) can be put into the appropriate cell(s) in your Google Spreadsheet that you would like formatted. To see an example of how font sizes can be controlled in HTML, click here or to see the result on your mobile device search for "HTML Font Size Example" in the gWhiz Catalog.
Multisided Flashcards for iOS:
Click here to see help on creating your own multisided flashcards or here to see a multisided example.
The "-info" worksheet: On the second worksheet in each template you can control certain aspects of the way the data set is displayed. At a minimum, please fill out the "Description" and "Tags" fields. We plan to enhance our search capability in the future and it will make it it much easier for others to search if the file has a recognizable name and these two fields are completed. See the template for definitions of how each tag works. Note that: · If you use any of the settings on the -info worksheet, make sure that the first and second worksheet have the same name, differing only by the "-info" extension. · Do not change the contents of Column A on the -info worksheet, enter your data in Column B next to the appropriate label. Fields that Apply to All Content Types and Devices: · "tags": add words here that will help a search engine find the content, similar to keywords you would use in a library search. Separate each tag with a space. · "description": enter a text description that will be displayed as the subtitle line you see within the application.
· "titleoverride": (BlackBerry Only) overrides the convention of using the first worksheet's name (e.g., Sheet1) name for the content name. The value entered here becomes the displayed title on the device.
· "author": If desired, enter an author. This will be displayed when viewing in the gWhiz Catalog from the web. · "copyright": Currently all gWhiz data sets are distributed via a GNU Free Documentation License. See the gWhiz Terms & Conditions for details. Fields that Only Apply to iOS and BlackBerry: · "multiplechoice": TRUE or FALSE. Enter TRUE (the default if nothing is entered) if you would like Multiple Choice Mode to work with this cardset, enter FALSE if not. NOTE: this field applies only to two column gFlash+ spreadsheets where you would like gFlash+ to randomly display three alternative answers from other rows in Column B. Use the multiple choice template to establish several answer choices unique to a question. · "reversible": TRUE or FALSE. Enter TRUE (the default) if you would like questions and answers to be reversible on the Front and Back of the cards, enter FALSE if not. Making the questions and answers reversible is helpful for learning different languages, however, it is not appropriate for most trivia cardsets. · "testonlymode": TRUE or FALSE. Enter FALSE if you would like both Test and Study Modes. If set to TRUE, does not allow "Study Mode"; all uses of this cardset are scored. · "welcomemessage": This message will pop-up when you start this cardset.
Additional Fields that Only Apply to iOS:
· "overrideR2L": TRUE or FALSE. Enter TRUE if your flashcard set contains a language that reads left to right (e.g., Arabic, Hebrew).
· "usewebview": Enter TRUE if you would like to use HTML formatting in your cardset to control bold, italics, font size, etc. The default is FALSE and gFlash+ will automatically format the text for the device screen.
· "autoshuffleOff": TRUE or FALSE. Enter TRUE to disable the auto-shuffle feature on your first pass through the cardset. This is helpful for learning ordered lists. If set to FALSE (the default) cards will be displayed in random order.
· "respectnewlines": TRUE or FALSE. When TRUE, new line characters (\n) are translated into HTML line breaks (<BR>). By default, respectnewlines will be set to TRUE when the source is GoogleDocs or any GTS source (e.g., Study Stack/gWhiz Catalog). Quizlet is already in HTML.
